|Question||Has anybody here heard that Austin, Texas bills itself as "the live music capital of the world"? I've heard this claim for 20 years, but I don't know if it's just an expression of our city's self-delusion or if we've actually earned this title.|

I, didn't know it was famous for its music, so I checked Wikipedia. The Musical Acts section is surprisingly long: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Austin#Musical_acts

it has a very decent punk scene the last time I was there. Seen a good few of those bands too.

I'd guess that it could claim to be the music capital of the US, at least in some categories of music. For most Americans, the US is the world, so that figures. (-: Otherwise, no, I haven't heard anything about Austin's music before. I do have a friend from university who's developing computer games in Austin, so I've always imagined it to be renowned for that industry but maybe that's just extreme bias on my part.

I have rarely heard music and Austin combined, so I would have to say the same as Lee - maybe best in the US, but not the world... Of course, it may have the most live music or something, but if it is not really heard of outside the city I don't think it can count!
