Excellent 9.0 12 angry men (1957)
Excellent 8.8 Fight club (1999)
Excellent 8.6 Interstellar (2014)
The casting is let down by the indecipherable drawl that permeates all of the early scenes, only partly helped by subtitles.  After that, the visuals and story are strong - with a few twists, a couple of teary parts and a good ending.

Excellent 8.0 The princess bride (1987)
Excellent 8.0 Twelve monkeys (1995)
Excellent 7.9 Amour (2012)

Excellent 7.4 Cloud atlas (2012)
Excellent 7.4 Frozen (2013)
Excellent 7.4 In the house (2012)
An original story about the lives of a boring couple as told in an entertaining way by a student - encouraged by his teacher.  The teacher remains detached, in a somewhat unbelievable manner, yet as the viewer you end up drawn into the story within the story.
Excellent 7.4 Limitless (2011)
Excellent 7.4 Mirage (2018)
Excellent 7.4 Ready player one (2018)
This feels like the first true 'meta film' - packed with so many pop culture references (and thus other films) that everyone will take something different away from it.  Almost overwhelming at times, it's visually impressive and full of action and drama.  Convincing enough that you start to believe that you're living in 2045.
Excellent 7.4 Starred up (2013)
Extremely violent and filled with swearing, this is somewhat difficult to watch.  It's also a gem with great acting and a hard look at life in prison, with believable characters and narrative.
Excellent 7.4 Up in the air (2009)
Excellent 7.4 Wonder woman (2017)
Possibly a bit long, although that's no bad thing.  Good casting and a really good script.  The story moves along at a sedate pace without being too slow.

Excellent 7.2 T2 trainspotting (2017)
Excellent 7.2 The dead zone (1983)
One of Christopher Walken's best films (ignoring the bad hair).  Only graphic in one or two places, with a great story that grips you to the end.
Excellent 7.2 The founder (2016)
A fascinating look at the history of McDonald's and fast food in general.  What seems obvious today had to be invented by someone once - yet making that ingenuity spread so far and wide took some underhandedness.

Silly yet enjoyable with great characters.  A cult classic that I'd never heard of.
Excellent 7.1 The time traveller's wife (2009)
Excellent 7.1 X+Y (2014)
A powerful look at what it's like to be different, yet find that you're nothing special when surrounded by others who are somewhat like you.  The story keeps you hooked and the characters have a genuine depth.
Excellent 7.0 9 (2009)
Excellent 7.0 A most violent year (2014)

Hi-larious from the beginning, a quirky Brazilian film that has plenty of nods to other time travel films with great acting and an entertaining storyline.
Excellent 6.9 The world's end (2013)
Brilliantly funny from the start and very intelligent, it's only let down by a slightly weak end.
Excellent 6.9 Triangle (2009)
A fascinating time loop story exploring the theme of predetermination.  Very graphic violence with disturbing images at times.
Excellent 6.9 World's greatest dad (2009)
Excellent 6.8 A ghost story (2017)
An unusual film about a time-travelling ghost, seen as a man wearing a white sheet.  It's a slow-moving story, which seems interminable at first yet soon draws you in and is both moving and impressive by the end.
Excellent 6.8 Elizabeth: the golden age (2007)
Excellent 6.8 Horrible bosses (2011)
Hilarious comedy with one crazy scene after another, full of dumb mistakes and decisions.  Has some flaws and is a weaker variant of 'Game night' (2018) yet still highly recommended.

Excellent 6.8 Tristan and Isolde (2006)
Excellent 6.8 Unstoppable (2010)
Excellent 6.8 Yes man (2008)
Jim Carey can be annoying.  He is annoying at many times in this film.  Yet this story is refreshingly original and well written and the characters work well too.  Ultimately, this is my sort of film - even though I'm not a fan of Jim Carey - so I have no choice but to recommend it.
Excellent 6.7 Albert Nobbs (2011)
Excellent 6.7 Carrie Pilby (2016)
An engaging main character trying to find her way, her unusual nature and intelligence often causing friction with those around her.

Great characters and a realistic and gritty story.
Excellent 6.5 Stand up guys (2012)
A pair of retired criminals have one last night of fun before one is due to kill the other, on the orders of a mob boss.  Stand up performances by both Al Pacino, Christopher Walken - characters you really enjoy watching and hilarious to watch throughout.
Excellent 6.5 The endless (2017)
Excellent 6.5 The interview (2014)
A totally unrealistic story of an attempted assassination. Manages to stay funny throughout and highly entertaining.
Excellent 6.5 The motive (2017)
Excellent 6.5 Time lapse (2014)
Excellent 6.4 Europa report (2013)
Apart from the flawed idea that a slowly spinning spaceship would have normal gravity, and a few other issues, the film comes across as something that could really happen.  It gets across the difficulties of being so far from home and trying to survive and do science at the same time.  The acting is very good and the characters work well, apart from the lack of a commander.
Excellent 6.4 Nappily Ever After (2018)
Excellent 6.4 Oddball and the penguins (2015)

Excellent 6.3 Albatross (2011)
Excellent 6.3 ARQ (2016)
Excellent 6.3 Bright (2017)
Cleverly done - clearly fantasy yet firmly rooted in the world we know (well, if anyone can know Los Angeles). Strong characters and a good reflection on human nature.

Deliberately surreal and unusual, with some humour throughout.
Excellent 6.3 Knight and day (2010)
Excellent 6.3 Paycheck (2003)
Excellent 6.3 Project almanac (2015)
Excellent 6.3 Terminator 3: rise of the machines (2003)
Excellent 6.3 The American (2010)
An unusually slow pace for a modern film, interspersed with tense moments - making a refreshing change from typical action films.  George Clooney is well cast in the main role as a brooding yet deeply disturbed man, suspicious of everything and everyone around him.
Excellent 6.3 The borrowers (2011)
Excellent 6.2 Dead in a week (or your money back) (2018)
Excellent 6.2 Infinity chamber (2016)
Don't be put off by a story has been done before - someone trying to escape form a room and not knowing what's real and what's not.  This film has good acting/characters and also keeps you interested to the end.

Good 8.0 Threads (1984)
Good 8.0 What ever happened to baby Jane? (1962)
A dark look at what can happen when a disabled person is at the mercy of an unhinged individual, in this case her sister.  The two started as actresses at a young age, with one successful and the other remaining child-like and unable to make sound decisions.
Good 7.9 Arrival (2016)

Good 7.6 300 (2006)
Good 7.6 Despicable me (2010)
Good 7.6 End of watch (2012)

Good 7.6 Freedom writers (2007)
Good 7.6 Harry Potter and the half-blood prince (2009)
Good 7.6 Leviathan (2014)
A depressing tale that is well told.  The characters are interesting and the plot holds together, giving a picture of life in Russia that is downtrodden by those who are both corrupt and in power.
Good 7.6 Lord of war (2005)
Good 7.6 Mulan (1998)

Good 7.4 The way way back (2013)
Good 7.3 10 things I hate about you (1999)
Good 7.3 Anomalisa (2015)
Unusual and original, although an ultimately unhappy exploration of a man's (or rather, puppet's) life with depression and his attempts to deal with seemingly bland people.  It helps to know that the cast consists of only 3 actors, with the third listed as 'everyone else'.

Well written and engaging with strong characters.  Some gripping moments and a fascinating story.

Good 7.2 Voices of a distant star (2002)

A quirky and original look at lives affected by drugs and the world they live in.  Good characters and worth watching - funny throughout with some violence towards the end.
Good 7.1 A late quartet (2012)
Engaging characters and a good story.  Before the quartet play at the end of the film, we learn about their dynamic and see where their emotional input comes from.  Let down slightly by the casting of well-known actors who do not portray the playing of instruments in a particularly realistic manner.
Good 7.1 Brave (2012)
Has a very strong beginning with lots of hilarious comedy, almost inevitably becoming less entertaining once the serious story line takes off.  Accepting that the story is aimed at younger viewers, still worth a look by an older audience.
Good 7.1 Die hard 4.0 (2007)
Good 7.1 Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
The first half of this slightly quirky romantic comedy is fairly average (and decidedly American), whereas the second half is a genuine improvement.

Good 7.0 Real steel (2011)
Surprisingly compelling fight sequences between believable robot boxers, let down by the slow-moving father/son subplot (despite the good casting).  The mix of animatronics with CGI based on motion capture (as done for Avatar) works extremely well.  The final fight makes for a surprisingly good ending, even if slightly unrealistic.  It's tempting to wonder if robot boxing will become a reality.
Good 7.0 Star trek beyond (2016)
Surprisingly good for the third film of the reboot (and the 13th overall).  Despite some silly and implausible moments, the story works pretty well and the effects are impressive.
Good 7.0 Super 8 (2011)
A monster story set in 1979.  Wonderful characters and a good plot, with impressive effects.

An entertaining thriller with a decent ending, but far too predictable.
Good 7.0 World war Z (2013)
Good 6.9 Knight's tale (2001)

A story of childlike innocence amongst grown men who happen to be thieves.  Enjoyable and entertaining throughout and typical of the 1990s.

Funny and well put together although notably lesser than the original.  Lacks some of the details and misses opportunities to be better.

Good 6.8 Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)
You know a story is good when you're on the side of the people committing a fraud, although this one also has both plenty of depth and room for a few smiles.
Good 6.8 Grow your own (2007)
Heartwarming and funny with a good pace throughout and well-written characters.  Not especially complex but worth seeing.

Two company partners have a product that allows them to design experiences and give them to people via a drop of liquid in the eye.  Both have their own hidden agendas and the story is as hugely entertaining as it is complex, keeping you guessing - what is real and what isn't?
Good 6.2 Parker (2013)
Average in many ways, but good for the action film that it is.  A little formulaic with some flaws yet still very enjoyable.
Good 6.2 RoboCop (2014)
Surprisingly good remake of the original and nicely updated. The satire of American culture is slightly more subtle and appears later on.  Perhaps you cannot buy much for a dollar these days?

Good 5.0 Swimfan (2002)
Good 4.6 Paradox (2016)
So long as you start this film expecting it to be a somewhat comical time travel story, you won't go far wrong.  Don't make the mistake of trying to take it too seriously, especially since some of the acting is terribly wooden and the special effects (particularly at the end) aren't great. But it's original and entertaining as well as having plenty of complexity for the discerning time travel fan.

Can an animated horror film be scary?  Not in this case, although this is also meant to be a comedy so it's not clear what the intention is.  The humour is actually pretty good, with plenty of chuckles to be had, yet the story is lacking something.  To be fair, it is really a children's film.

Average 6.6 Creation (2009)
Overall a surprisingly weak film which spends most of the story portraying Darwin as a sick, timid man and only barely beginning to redeem itself in the last few scenes.  The disjointed flashbacks are jarring, although touching at times.  The film focuses too much on one part of Darwin's life and neglects how he came to his ideas.  It also entirely omits the impact of his work, which isn't even covered by the text appearing at the end.

Average 5.9 Doomsday (2008)
Action film with excessive gore and a pointless plot (1980s style).

Average 5.9 The warning (2018)
A somewhat daft concept that is nonetheless well executed and quite enjoyable.
Average 5.8 Hollow man (2000)
Average 5.8 Star trek: Horizon (2016)
First of all, this is a fan film - so expectations should be low.  Indeed, the special effects are as good as you might hope for 2016 - yet are let down by a fuzzy blending of the actors with the set background.  The ship belongs to the 'Enterprise' prequel era (i.e. before Kirk and Spock) and so the story relates to the temporal cold war of that series. It's actually a pretty engaging script and decent plot.  The acting is typically wooden and clearly at an amateur level but I see this as charming rather than a major issue.

As might be expected, the pace of this 1974 film is very slow.  However, the plot doesn't make up for this and is at times confusing or poorly executed.  The characters are so-so and not especially engaging.

Poor 7.2 Me and you and everyone we know (2005)
Poor 7.1 Marley and me (2008)
A surprisingly bland film with relatively dull characters and very little actual humour, despite supposedly being a comedy.  The dog hardly develops at all and fails to impress as a character.
Poor 7.1 There's something about Mary (1998)
Poor 7.1 Thirst (2009)

Brilliantly funny from the start and very intelligent, it's only let down by a slightly weak end.

Mildly amusing and easy watching although somewhat dated and simplistic.
Excellent 5.2 See you yesterday (2019)
Excellent 6.5 The motive (2017)
Good 6.2 RoboCop (2014)

Good 7.0 Den of Thieves (2018)
Good 5.5 Hoot (2006)
Daft and simple yet somehow still enjoyable.  If you like owls.
Excellent 6.3 Bright (2017)
Cleverly done - clearly fantasy yet firmly rooted in the world we know (well, if anyone can know Los Angeles). Strong characters and a good reflection on human nature.
Average 6.6 Inherent vice (2014)
An unusual take on the 1970s and an unusual form of private investigator.  It is somewhat entertaining, yet very drawn out and unsatisfying.
Excellent 7.2 The founder (2016)
A fascinating look at the history of McDonald's and fast food in general.  What seems obvious today had to be invented by someone once - yet making that ingenuity spread so far and wide took some underhandedness.
Good 7.2 The square (2017)
A very quirky Swedish film which keeps you engaged from start to finish.  There are some unusual/unexpected events and scenes that make it worth watching.
Average 6.9 This beautiful fantastic (2016)
Quaint with likeable characters.  A simple enough premise although slightly lacking.
Excellent 7.1 Side effects (2013)
Much better than I expected.  Quite dark and the story may not go in the direction you expect.
Good 6.2 Parker (2013)
Average in many ways, but good for the action film that it is.  A little formulaic with some flaws yet still very enjoyable.
Good 7.0 Super 8 (2011)
A monster story set in 1979.  Wonderful characters and a good plot, with impressive effects.
Good 6.8 Heli (2013)
A dark story yet an interesting portrayal of otherwise ordinary life surrounded by drugs and violence.  Good cinematography.
Excellent 7.7 The game (1997)
An original and hugely engaging plot.  A classic that has to be watched more than once.
Excellent 6.8 Horrible bosses (2011)
Hilarious comedy with one crazy scene after another, full of dumb mistakes and decisions.  Has some flaws and is a weaker variant of 'Game night' (2018) yet still highly recommended.
Average 6.2 The discovery (2017)
Quite entertaining and well written despite the unconventional story, with good characters and a plot that keeps you guessing.
Good 6.7 Demolition man (1993)
Definitely recommended for the first half alone, although it falls a bit flat once the initial comedy gives way to the slightly serious ending.  It's good to see that the film has really stood the test of time and is definitely both a masterpiece and a classic.
Good 7.4 A walk to remember (2002)
Good for what it is, a fairly straightforward love story yet also a good tear-jerker.
Good 7.0 Star trek beyond (2016)
Surprisingly good for the third film of the reboot (and the 13th overall).  Despite some silly and implausible moments, the story works pretty well and the effects are impressive.
Average 5.9 The warning (2018)
A somewhat daft concept that is nonetheless well executed and quite enjoyable.
Good 6.8 What happened to Monday (2017)
Engaging throughout with good acting and effects, etc., although a little overdone in places.
Good 6.8 Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)
You know a story is good when you're on the side of the people committing a fraud, although this one also has both plenty of depth and room for a few smiles.
Good 5.9 Gnomeo and Juliet (2011)
I've seen this a few times and it's got a lot going on, beyond being very entertaining and humorous throughout. Worth seeing, although far from perfect.
Excellent 6.8 A ghost story (2017)
An unusual film about a time-travelling ghost, seen as a man wearing a white sheet.  It's a slow-moving story, which seems interminable at first yet soon draws you in and is both moving and impressive by the end.
Good 6.3 Terminator Genisys (2015)
We start in the future and then go back to 1984 and find that it's an alternate timeline from the original film, before jumping forward to 2017.  The story is good, Arnie has has signature humour and the effects are mostly great. Surprisingly good for a sequel.
Average 7.0 ParaNorman (2012)
Can an animated horror film be scary?  Not in this case, although this is also meant to be a comedy so it's not clear what the intention is.  The humour is actually pretty good, with plenty of chuckles to be had, yet the story is lacking something.  To be fair, it is really a children's film.
Excellent 6.9 Christine (2016)
A powerful and true story, well told and brilliantly acted. Very believable and sincere.
Excellent 6.7 F/X: murder by illusion (1986)
A 1980s classic, still original to this day.
Poor 7.8 The conversation (1974)
As might be expected, the pace of this 1974 film is very slow.  However, the plot doesn't make up for this and is at times confusing or poorly executed.  The characters are so-so and not especially engaging.
Good 6.7 Starter for 10 (2006)
Excellent 6.1 Burke and Hare (2010)
Surprisingly good, with an informative storyline and plenty of strong humour.
Average 6.5 Magic in the moonlight (2014)
Entertaining yet with a fairly slow pace and lacking any real magic.
Excellent 6.8 The long kiss goodnight (1996)
Very much dated with unnecessary sexism, although still extremely well put together for a classic action film.
Good 6.9 Ghostbusters (2016)
Funny and well put together although notably lesser than the original.  Lacks some of the details and misses opportunities to be better.
Good 6.9 Vanilla sky (2001)
A good film in isolation - yet a poor imitation of the original, 'Open your eyes' (1997), when both are watched together.
Average 6.3 The losers (2010)
Lots of action but a so-so story and ultimately unsatisfying with a weak ending.
Average 6.4 My old lady (2014)
Based on a play - which makes it seem a bit drawn out, yet it's emotionally deep and interesting throughout.  A good introspection on the effect parents have on children, although with a somewhat simplistic story.
Good 7.2 Wild Bill (2011)
A quirky and original look at lives affected by drugs and the world they live in.  Good characters and worth watching - funny throughout with some violence towards the end.
Poor 6.2 Astro boy (2009)
A weak story and unexciting characters in a world with too many flaws to ignore.  The human caricatures are too extreme and somewhat uncanny.  The plot glosses over the massive loss of life and sensationalises the violence.  Not boring but not very exciting either.
Excellent 7.3 Maktub (2017)
Very funny with great acting and a good story as well. Highly recommended and a fascinating view of Israeli life for those of us in the West.
Excellent 6.2 Infinity chamber (2016)
Don't be put off by a story has been done before - someone trying to escape form a room and not knowing what's real and what's not.  This film has good acting/characters and also keeps you interested to the end.
Good 7.7 The past (2013)
A good and engaging story overall but somewhat unsatisfying at the end.  The characters are complex yet not always believable.
Excellent 6.7 Carrie Pilby (2016)
An engaging main character trying to find her way, her unusual nature and intelligence often causing friction with those around her.
Good 6.5 Idiocracy (2006)
Excellent 7.1 X+Y (2014)
A powerful look at what it's like to be different, yet find that you're nothing special when surrounded by others who are somewhat like you.  The story keeps you hooked and the characters have a genuine depth.
Good 7.1 Brave (2012)
Has a very strong beginning with lots of hilarious comedy, almost inevitably becoming less entertaining once the serious story line takes off.  Accepting that the story is aimed at younger viewers, still worth a look by an older audience.
Good 7.3 Death at a funeral (2007)
Average 5.6 Listening (2014)
Excellent 7.2 The dead zone (1983)
One of Christopher Walken's best films (ignoring the bad hair).  Only graphic in one or two places, with a great story that grips you to the end.
Excellent 6.9 The man from the future (2011)
Hi-larious from the beginning, a quirky Brazilian film that has plenty of nods to other time travel films with great acting and an entertaining storyline.
Good 7.5 Perfume: the story of a murderer (2006)
Dark, very dark.  Not for the average viewer and with some weak points in the plot, the story manages to be both unusual and interesting.
Good 7.1 Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
The first half of this slightly quirky romantic comedy is fairly average (and decidedly American), whereas the second half is a genuine improvement.
Excellent 5.5 Synchronicity (2015)
Time travel at its best.  The characters are compelling and the sequence of events keeps you hooked until the end.
Good 6.2 OtherLife (2017)
Two company partners have a product that allows them to design experiences and give them to people via a drop of liquid in the eye.  Both have their own hidden agendas and the story is as hugely entertaining as it is complex, keeping you guessing - what is real and what isn't?
Average 7.3 The best exotic marigold hotel (2011)
Moderately entertaining - about the relationships between people but with lackluster characters and no real story.
Excellent 6.9 Game night (2018)
Brilliant comedy with an intelligent and layered story. Great characters and a lovely use of parody throughout, with some unforgettable scenes.
Poor 7.0 Tropic thunder (2008)
A poor execution of an otherwise promising concept.  The special effects are impressive but the comedy fails badly. The film suffers from immature humour and a tasteless script that really doesn't impress.
Excellent 6.5 My brother the devil (2012)
Great characters and a realistic and gritty story.
Excellent 6.5 The interview (2014)
A totally unrealistic story of an attempted assassination. Manages to stay funny throughout and highly entertaining.
Excellent 7.9 Amour (2012)
Poignant and intelligent.  The terrifying and gradual decline of a stroke victim is told in an incredibly realistic manner, along with the impact on her partner who is both caring and carer.
Good 7.6 End of watch (2012)
Likeable characters and an engaging plot, let down a little by somewhat unrealistic gangsters.  Very dark and violent at times, balanced a little by some good humour.
Excellent 6.4 When we first met (2018)
Great characters and very good writing, a time-loop romantic comedy with plenty of twists and endless humour.
Excellent 8.6 Interstellar (2014)
The casting is let down by the indecipherable drawl that permeates all of the early scenes, only partly helped by subtitles.  After that, the visuals and story are strong - with a few twists, a couple of teary parts and a good ending.
Good 7.6 Leviathan (2014)
A depressing tale that is well told.  The characters are interesting and the plot holds together, giving a picture of life in Russia that is downtrodden by those who are both corrupt and in power.
Good 6.9 Bottle rocket (1996)
A story of childlike innocence amongst grown men who happen to be thieves.  Enjoyable and entertaining throughout and typical of the 1990s.
Good 6.2 First snow (2006)
An intriguing premise that keeps your interest throughout, yet the store doesn't have any real surprises.
Excellent 6.7 The ninth gate (1999)
A brilliant classic tale of one man's almost unwitting descent thanks to the devil.  Beautiful locations and wonderful characters.
Excellent 6.9 Triangle (2009)
A fascinating time loop story exploring the theme of predetermination.  Very graphic violence with disturbing images at times.
Good 6.4 The awakening (2011)
A pretty good ghost story set in 1921, centred around a woman who aims to disprove paranormal activity at a boarding school.
Good 8.0 What ever happened to baby Jane? (1962)
A dark look at what can happen when a disabled person is at the mercy of an unhinged individual, in this case her sister.  The two started as actresses at a young age, with one successful and the other remaining child-like and unable to make sound decisions.
Average 7.3 Shaun the sheep movie (2015)
Not amazing but clever and witty fun for a quiet day.
Excellent 7.7 The Muppet Christmas carol (1992)
A wonderful adaptation of the classic tale, with Gonzo playing the part of Dickens as the narrator.  Humans and Muppets play alongside one another and tell the story of Scrooge in a novel and very entertaining way.
Good 5.0 Deck the halls (2006)
Good 6.4 Before I fall (2017)
Engaging characters and humour, mixed together with an intriguing story about a girl who takes her time to work out how to handle a repeating day.
Excellent 8.0 The Martian (2015)
Wonderfully written with good acting.  A believable look at what could plausibly be a future mission to Mars (although the storm isn't realistic as depicted in the film).
Average 7.3 Café de Flore (2011)
A silly film that never quite makes up for its weak premise, which isn't explained until the end.  The characters are moderately interesting but the story is quite poor.
Average 6.5 Lunatique (2016)
Visually very good - but this short ends too quickly to be satisfying.
Good 6.7 Penelope (2006)
An enjoyable fairy tale with good characters.
Good 8.0 Blade runner 2049 (2017)
This sequel sets a good mood despite its extended length. The visuals are also good and although the plot isn't that special it's entertaining enough to be worth watching.
Poor 7.1 Marley and me (2008)
A surprisingly bland film with relatively dull characters and very little actual humour, despite supposedly being a comedy.  The dog hardly develops at all and fails to impress as a character.
Excellent 6.3 John dies at the end (2012)
Deliberately surreal and unusual, with some humour throughout.
Poor 5.9 Up there (2011)
Supposedly a comedy but quite monotonous and lacking any solid humour.  Some good moments yet disappointing overall.
Good 7.2 The leap (2015)
Very good visually and fairly engaging for a short.
Average 6.3 From the future with love (2013)
Amusing at first but this short lacks a story.
Average 7.6 True grit (2010)
Good from the start, although it has a lackluster ending. Enjoyable characters and not bad for a Western.
Excellent 7.4 In the house (2012)
An original story about the lives of a boring couple as told in an entertaining way by a student - encouraged by his teacher.  The teacher remains detached, in a somewhat unbelievable manner, yet as the viewer you end up drawn into the story within the story.
Excellent 7.0 Frequently asked questions about time travel (2009)
I enjoyed this film even more the second time than on the first viewing.  The characters and writing are wonderful and the plot is anything but predictable.
Excellent 7.1 The frighteners (1996)
Silly yet enjoyable with great characters.  A cult classic that I'd never heard of.
Excellent 6.3 The American (2010)
An unusually slow pace for a modern film, interspersed with tense moments - making a refreshing change from typical action films.  George Clooney is well cast in the main role as a brooding yet deeply disturbed man, suspicious of everything and everyone around him.
Good 7.0 The gift (2015)
An entertaining thriller with a decent ending, but far too predictable.
Good 6.5 Premium rush (2012)
Keeps you interested all the way and well filmed.  The characters are fairly interesting and there's lots of humour (although some is a bit dark).
Excellent 7.8 The lunchbox (2013)
Brilliantly written and acted with a compelling pace throughout.  The voice of 'auntie' is especially funny.
Good 6.6 Shooting fish (1997)
Unrealistic but charming and quirky comedy.
Good 6.8 Exam (2009)
Interesting and entertaining but could have been better.
Good 6.9 Knocked up (2007)
A solid story and enjoyable to watch, although not very strong on the comedy side.
Average 6.8 My beautiful laundrette (1985)
A fascinating look at multicultural London in the 1980s, let down by somewhat average performances.
Good 5.5 Snakes on a Plane (2006)
A wonderfully original disaster film, let down by the blatantly fake snakes and the simplistic characters.
Excellent 7.4 Wonder woman (2017)
Possibly a bit long, although that's no bad thing.  Good casting and a really good script.  The story moves along at a sedate pace without being too slow.
Average 7.3 Sweeney Todd (2007)
Quite gory musical, with blood that is clearly fake and apparently disappears by itself.
Good 7.2 Carol (2015)
Well written and engaging with strong characters.  Some gripping moments and a fascinating story.
Poor 6.1 Snow White and the huntsman (2012)
Spectacular special effects fail to make up for poor casting and lackluster performances.  An overly serious take with too little humour and some glaring continuity errors.
Good 6.8 Rent (2005)
A good storyline and quite entertaining despite being quite long.  Good singers although the music isn't very catchy.
Good 7.8 The big short (2015)
Good writing - a documentary of sorts about the true events of the US subprime mortgage crisis and those who saw it coming.  A mix of humour and shock.
Good 6.8 Grow your own (2007)
Heartwarming and funny with a good pace throughout and well-written characters.  Not especially complex but worth seeing.
Average 6.6 Blindness (2008)
Unnecessarily dark film, with a main character who fails to make the blindingly obvious choices until it's too late.
Average 5.9 Doomsday (2008)
