The casting is let down by the indecipherable drawl that
permeates all of the early scenes, only partly helped by
subtitles. After that, the visuals and story are strong -
with a few twists, a couple of teary parts and a good
ending.

overwhelming at times, it's visually impressive and full of
action and drama. Convincing enough that you start to

What ever happened to baby Jane? (1962)
A dark look at what can happen when a disabled person is at
the mercy of an unhinged individual, in this case her
sister. The two started as actresses at a young age, with
one successful and the other remaining child-like and unable
to make sound decisions.

A late quartet (2012)
Engaging characters and a good story. Before the quartet
play at the end of the film, we learn about their dynamic
and see where their emotional input comes from. Let down
slightly by the casting of well-known actors who do not
portray the playing of instruments in a particularly
realistic manner.

Real steel (2011)
Surprisingly compelling fight sequences between believable
robot boxers, let down by the slow-moving father/son subplot
(despite the good casting). The mix of animatronics with
CGI based on motion capture (as done for Avatar) works
extremely well. The final fight makes for a surprisingly
good ending, even if slightly unrealistic. It's tempting to
wonder if robot boxing will become a reality.

Paradox (2016)
So long as you start this film expecting it to be a somewhat
comical time travel story, you won't go far wrong. Don't
make the mistake of trying to take it too seriously,
especially since some of the acting is terribly wooden and
the special effects (particularly at the end) aren't great.
But it's original and entertaining as well as having plenty
of complexity for the discerning time travel fan.

Can an animated horror film be scary? Not in this case,
although this is also meant to be a comedy so it's not clear
what the intention is. The humour is actually pretty good,
with plenty of chuckles to be had, yet the story is lacking
something. To be fair, it is really a children's film.

Creation (2009)
Overall a surprisingly weak film which spends most of the
story portraying Darwin as a sick, timid man and only barely
beginning to redeem itself in the last few scenes. The
disjointed flashbacks are jarring, although touching at
times. The film focuses too much on one part of Darwin's
life and neglects how he came to his ideas. It also
entirely omits the impact of his work, which isn't even
covered by the text appearing at the end.

Star trek: Horizon (2016)
First of all, this is a fan film - so expectations should be
low. Indeed, the special effects are as good as you might
hope for 2016 - yet are let down by a fuzzy blending of the
actors with the set background. The ship belongs to the
'Enterprise' prequel era (i.e. before Kirk and Spock) and so
the story relates to the temporal cold war of that series.
It's actually a pretty engaging script and decent plot. The
acting is typically wooden and clearly at an amateur level
but I see this as charming rather than a major issue.

The conversation (1974)
As might be expected, the pace of this 1974 film is very
slow. However, the plot doesn't make up for this and is at
times confusing or poorly executed. The characters are
so-so and not especially engaging.

Historical and violent, yet with hardly any redeeming
features. There are few positive plot points and little of
interest here.

Marley and me (2008)
A surprisingly bland film with relatively dull characters
and very little actual humour, despite supposedly being a
comedy. The dog hardly develops at all and fails to impress
as a character.

Quite a slow pace. The story becomes quite surreal without
managing to be particularly original.

Tropic thunder (2008)
A poor execution of an otherwise promising concept. The
special effects are impressive but the comedy fails badly.
The film suffers from immature humour and a tasteless script
that really doesn't impress.

Ted (2012)
Riddled with racist, sexist and homophobic language and
inappropriate behaviour which is somehow never highlighted
as wrong. The story is fairly dull and none of the
characters are especially interesting.

Astro boy (2009)
A weak story and unexciting characters in a world with too
many flaws to ignore. The human caricatures are too extreme
and somewhat uncanny. The plot glosses over the massive
loss of life and sensationalises the violence. Not boring
but not very exciting either.
